Meaning of Colonial Social services
Colonial social services, these were the services provided by the colonialists which involved the provision of education, health, water, housing and electrical services. These services were provided in order to help the creation of Colonial economy and Colonial Administration.
Colonial Education
Education is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, and wisdom in order to master the environment. Colonial education was the process of providing knowledge, skills, and values that were necessary for the mastering of the social, political and economic situation during the colonial era.
This education was provided in schools and colleges which were belonged to either colonial governments or the missionaries. So this education replaced traditional/ informal education existed before the colonialism.

Colonial Health services involved the provisional of medical needs to the white men and colonial subjects. This was practiced through the construction of government and missionaries’ hospitals, dispensaries in the colonies and most of these hospitals were found in Production areas, Armed forces stations and in urban centers.

These were also the services provided by the colonialists, they were provided in order to facilitate the economic interests of the metropolis, they based on racial discrimination whereby the European were given the best quality as opposed to Africans who received poor housing and water services

*Political administrative and economic functions determined the nature of housing and water services provided. Many Africans were attracted to move to urban centers after the World war.
*Improvement of transportation also encouraged the mobility of people to go the urban centers in order to get better services
*Introduction of land alienation and tax collection made the condition of living in rural areas to become difficult especially in the white settlers.

- It segregative in nature. Only sons of chiefs and Kings were given chance of going to schools,
- It was more theoretically than practically
- It was not relevant to the African environment
- It was for the white collar jobs education.
- It created classes between the educated and non-educated people, educated segregated the uneducated people.
- Colonial education created disunity and tribalism in African societies.
- It led to the spread of western civilization
- Much African were left illiteracy due to the small number of African who benefited with the education provided.
- Colonial education reduced patriotism among the Africans
- It prepared African societies for colonialism.

- Aimed at preventing and cure the white imposed diseases such as tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and others.
- Also, they aimed at maximizing the interests of capitalism in Africa.
Features of Colonial Health Services
- Hospitals and dispensaries were built in urban areas, plantation farms and areas with settler’s farms.
- It was provided with racial discrimination, Whites received the best health services followed by Asians and African.
- They were religious biased, they were Catholic and Lutheran hospitals.
- These hospitals provided western medication.
- It expanded market for the medicine from Europe
- They maintained the labor power for African peasants and labors who worked in settlers and plantation farms.
- They provided employment to their people in Africa especially European doctors.
- African traditional doctors replaced by the consumption of western medication.
- It increased the classes among the people in African due to the discrimination in nature.
