EXPRESSING FUTURE PLANS AND ACTIVITIES
Tense is a term/ a word used in grammar to show the time of the action/ event. In any language, tense is divided into three classes namely; Present Tense, Past Tense and Future Tense
Future tense
This is one of the types of the tenses which expressing events or activities which are expected to come in the coming days or time.
These actions usually are expressed by using auxiliary verbs such as “shall”, “will” and the words “going to”.
Terminologies used to show future time are tomorrow, next day, next year and the coming years in a sentence.
For example,
  • Tomorrow we are going to see the street children
  • Next time I am going to get the gift
  • You will meet the teacher next Friday
  • We shall dance on the stage.
As a student who wants to express future moments or events, it is important to understand the use of shall and will which are common words used in the future tense.
The use of shall and Will
  1. Shall

It normally used in the first persons that are a go alongside with “I” and “We” for talking about or predicting the future so it shows the determinations or promises about future activities.
For example,
  • We shall play the football.
  • I shall give you your book soon.
  • I shall make sure you look smart
  • We shall tell you everything.
NOTE
Shall can also be used in the second and third persons to express a command, a promise or a threat. So it can also be used by “He” ,“she” ,“it” ,“they” ,“you” and names of people.
For example,
  • You shall not smoke in the room.(Command)
  • You shall get a gold medal.(promise)
  • He shall be punished for his misbehavior. (a threat)

  1. Will

It is used by all the persons in the singular and plural forms such as “he”, “she”, “it”, “they”, “you” and other names of different things and people.
For example,
  • You will be the next one to get punishment.
  • She will go to schools.
  • He will come this afternoon.
  • They will meet you next time.
NOTE
Will can also be used in the first persons (I and We) to express determination, promise, threat and willingness in the first person.

For example,
  • I will marry you.(determination)
  • We will help you. (promise)
  • I will dismiss you from service.(a threat)
  • We will tell you the address. (Willingness)

Generally, Verbs used in future tenses do not change their forms due to the facts that there is the presence of auxiliary verbs “shall” and “will” which do not change the forms of verbs used.
